Murder Mystery

When a New York City police officer (Adam Sandler) finally takes his wife (Jennifer Aniston) on the long-promised European vacation, a chance encounter on the plane leads to their invitation to a private family reunion on the Super Yacht of elderly billionaire Malcolm Quince (Terence Stamp). Unfortunately they are the main suspects in a contemporary whodunit when Quince is murdered.

Aniston and Sandler, who previously starred together in 2011’s Just Go With It, savor their parts in Mystery as if their main motivation is to take advantage of the free trip to Italy and have a good time sliding down cobblestones. Although he is still the shlub who “dresses in cargo shorts to his own funeral”, Sandler is far from being the crazed man-child he once was. Meanwhile, Aniston maintains her plucky brightness even when she has to maneuver around a body or avoid a blowdart.

The comedy works well in the film and doesn’t go limp very often. This of course was in part due to the double storyline; the murders and Nick lying to Audrey about his law enforcement status. Jokes about taking out and plunging a dagger back into a corpse made death scenes funny, along with jokes at the expensive of the couples marriage. There were really no melancholy scenes in the whole film. For the viewer, it was a mind vacation. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the flick.
